Ethiopia Moves Closer to Introducing a New Modern Contraceptive Method: Hormonal IUD

The Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with EngenderHealth and professional associations including the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG), is taking a significant step toward expanding contraceptive options for women in Ethiopia through the introduction of the Hormonal Intrauterine Device (HIUD). This effort is part of the broader “Integrated RMNCH+PPFP Scale-up in High Caseload Facilities in Ethiopia” project, designed to strengthen the country’s reproductive health services.
Despite commendable progress in family planning (FP) access, many women in Ethiopia continue to face barriers in obtaining their preferred contraceptive methods. The introduction of the HIUD, a long-acting reversible contraceptive method, aims to improve access and expand choices for women nationwide.
A high-level consultative workshop was recently convened by the Ministry of Health and EngenderHealth to deliberate on the introduction of the HIUD into Ethiopia’s public health system. The workshop brought together stakeholders from across the health sector—experts, healthcare providers, policymakers, and professional bodies—to reflect on international best practices, assess Ethiopia’s current readiness, and chart the way forward for the national rollout of the method.
Key discussions focused on the feasibility and acceptability of integrating HIUD into the country’s method mix, reviewing draft training materials, and aligning plans with national family planning priorities. The workshop also highlighted the importance of updating registration, documentation, and supply chain systems to support effective integration.
Among the major outcomes of the workshop were the development of clear strategies for national HIUD implementation, agreement on the first draft of a HIUD training manual, and consensus on a roadmap for the nationwide rollout. A feasibility and acceptability study is also being planned as a critical next step.
This initiative demonstrates Ethiopia’s continued commitment to advancing women’s reproductive rights and health by increasing method choice and strengthening the overall quality of family planning services. As the country moves toward implementation, ESOG remains a proud partner in efforts that ensure every woman has access to safe, effective, and informed contraceptive care.
