The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) and the Evidence for Action (WHO/E4A) conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) in Hawassa on May 14, 2016. The trainees were obstetricians and gynecologists, midwives, emergency surgical officers, hospital management bodies, regional health bureau officials and relevant people from zonal health offices. Having started in Bahir Dar, there will be 4 more similar CMEs to be conducted until the end of June 2016 in Jimma, Dessie and Adama.
A National Symposium on Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) system was conducted at Capital Hotel and Spa on April 20-21, 2016. The symposium was organized by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) in collaboration with World Health Organization/ Evidence for Action (WHO/E4A), Department for International Development Ethiopia (DFID-Ethiopia), UKAID, and the University of Aberdeen. The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) took the role of organizing the event.
The event started with a series of opening remarks by dignitaries including Dr. Ephrem Tekle, director of Maternal and Child Health at FMoH and Bobby Stansfield, acting head of Human Development Team at DFID-Ethiopia. Following was an award given to Prof. Wendy Graham for her active role in reproductive health issues in Ethiopia and presentations by the Professor herself and Dr. Ruth Lawley and Dr. Azmach Hadush from WHO.
Attending the event were also representatives from the Regional Health Bureaus (RHBs), who presented their performances on MDSR, except for the Oromia and Afar regions who were not present during the two days event. The event did not complete without seeing presentations from RHBs on their action plans what they will do to improve their MDSR performances.
The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) executive board replaced two out going members on an election conducted during the 24th Annual Conference at Hilton Hotel on February 16, 2016. The outgoing members Dr. Abdulfetah Abdulkadir and Dr. Yonas Getachew who have served for two terms were replaced by Dr. Mahlet Yigeremu and Dr. Shiferaw Negash. On the same occasion, the general assembly has also given a full go ahead vote for the rest of the board members including the President, the Vice President, the Honorary Secretary and two board members. The election was as per the Society’s constitution. The board is the high executive committee accountable to the general assembly with seven members: the president, the vice president, the honorary secretary and four members.

The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) conducted the last Catchment Area Meeting (CAM) of Expanding the Services of Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) Project at Churchill Hotel in Addis Ababa last Tuesday March 22, 2016. Invited on the meeting were a total of 46 people from the health bureau, the Pharmaceutical Fund and Supply Agency (PFSA), regional laboratory and PMTCT service providers at private health facilities. The CAM at Churchill Hotel was the continuation of a series of CAMs which have been conducted in Bahir Dar, Dessie, Dire Dawa, Hawassa, and Adama. The CAMs have been administered by ESOG’s staff of the PMTCT Project. The meetings were part of the phasing out activities of the PMTCT project and the process of handing the project over the regional health bureaus for further administration. After the government introduced the PMTCT services to the public sector, ESOG has been providing the same service to the private sector in the various regions of Ethiopia. Through ESOG’s PMTCT Project about 78 private facilities have been supported.
