The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) conducted the 2nd manuscript writing training at Jupiter Hotel, Addis Ababa on April 22-24, 2019. The training, which was administered under the Ethiopian Journal of Reproductive Health (EJRH), the scientific publication of ESOG, aimed at promoting the culture of conducting and publishing researches among the Reproductive Health (RH) community.
Attending the training were 25 participants: junior gynecology faculty members, and RH professionals working in various institutions in Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Adama, Bahir Dar, Mekele, Arbaminch and others. Participants were selected on the basis that they have conducted but have not published researches.
The training was given by senior academicians and researchers: Dr. Ahmed Abdella, Editor-in-Chief of EJRH. Dr. Mirgisa Kaba, member of the editorial board of EJRH and Editor-in-Chief of the Ethiopian Journal of Health Development (EJHD), Dr. Girma Sitotaw, a senior bio statistician and member of the editorial board of EJHD, and Dr. Mekdes Daba, editorial board member of EJRH and H. Secretary for the Executive Board of ESOG.
EJRH has been under going a serious of changes for the last 12 months. With the financial support from the Center for International Reproductive Health Training (CIRHT), the Journal has launched it official website, started publishing four volumes a year and has been highly engaged in promoting the culture of conducting and publishing researches, among other changes.
The changes the journal has been undergoing are not without results: submission rates have been increasing and manuscripts have been received from abroad, from Kenya and Uganda, for the first time in EJRH’s more than a decade history. The Journal is also finalizing recognitions by the Addis Ababa University and closing on its membership at African Journals Online.
The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) conducted a workshop on Gynecologic and Obstetric Board Exam Blue Print Preparation. The workshop was conducted at InterContinental Addis Hotel, Addis Ababa on April 11 to 12, 019. Program directors, post graduate committee members and other members have participated on the workshop administered by the Examination, Certification Thematic Area of the ESOG-ACOG-CIHRT Collaboration Project.
Experts from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) and other local medical education experts have offered their expertise on the workshop. In the first of the planned two phases of workshops, the coordinators set to deliver a draft blue print for gynecologic and obstetric board exam. During the second phase of the workshop, participants are expected to develop questions for the board exam.
By the end of the project, ESOG will have realized a national board that will be responsible for the preparation and administration of certification examination graduating Ob-Gyns nationwide.
The ESOG-ACOG-CIRHT collaborative project was launched in June, 2016 with the objective of addressing four thematic areas: Resident Ship, CME, Journal and Certification and Accreditation. The thematic areas to be addressed by the collaborative project later added three more areas to its list: IT, PR & Communication and Leadership Development. The issue of medical ethics was added later as yet another focus area of the project.
The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) concluded its 27th Annual Conference on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. The main conference began at Intercontinental Addis Hotel on Tuesday February 5, 2019.
As the tradition has always been, prior to the conference was a series of Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) on February 3 and 4, 2019. The CME sessions covered lots of topics under urogynecology, endocrinology and infertility specialties.
The preconference CME sessions also involved hands on trainings on ultrasound and laparoscopy. The hands-on trainings were conducted in the compounds of Black Lion Hospital and Saint Hospital Millennium Medical College. Attended by more than hundred members of ESOG, the trainings were given by both local and international well experienced trainers.
The Opening event kicked off on Tuesday with speeches from Dr. Lia Tadesse, state minister of health, Dr. Delayehu Bekele, president of ESOG, Mr. Jamal Kassew, country director for Egender Health.
This year’s event caught attention as it brought to the stage two distinguished members for honorable awards. Dr. Mutesim Abdulahi was awarded for his community service, and Dr. Fisseha Tadesse received ESOG’s Outstanding Leadership Award. Two institutions, Ipas Ethiopia and David and Lucile Packard Foundation were also awarded for two decades of dedicated partnership.
That was not all about this year’s conference though. The tradition of awarding best abstracts has also been introduced. Of the 25 selected for presentations, two abstracts: Dr. Dawit Bacha for his abstract entitled- Prevalence and patterns of Cardiovascular Diseases among Pregnant Mothers Attending Antenatal in Addis Ababa, an oral presentation; and Dr. Mustefa Negash was also awarded for poster presentation entitled- Obstetric Referrals at SPHMMC: Pre-referral Care and Referral Appropriateness.
Poster presentations is also the other special feature of this year’s conference. Of the more than the 90 abstracts submitted to the Scientific Committee of ESOG, 10 were selected for poster presentations. These abstracts were displayed on TV screens to be visited by participants during lunch and breakout sessions.
Having been attended by hundreds of members, partners and other stakeholders, the event also brings to the scene the famous Dr. Mihiret Debebe. Dr. Mihiret gave a speech on Healing the Healer followed by brief discussions on the matters. Dr. Mihiret is known for his two novels “Yetekolefebet” and “Lela Sew” and for his psychological and motivational speeches.
The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) promoted the culture of conducting and publishing researches through the presence of the Ethiopian Journal of Reproductive Health (EJRH). The occasion was the 30th annual conference of the Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA). The event was conducted at Kereyu Resort Hotel, Adama on February 25-27, 2019.
The event brought together many experts in the health sector including H.E. Dr. Amin Aman, the minister of health.
The event was an opportunity for EJRH to promote the publication, the culture of conducting and publishing researches beyond meeting many researchers and potential reviewers.
